Melbourne, June 5: A man was shot dead by police on Monday after a hostage situation at an apartment complex in Brighton in Melbourne’s Bayside suburbs, the media reported.
The deadly stand-off began shortly after 4 p.m. when emergency services responded to reports of an explosion on Bay Street, the Australian Broadcasting Corp reported.
Specialist police attempted to negotiate with the victim who held a woman hostage in the complex.
“A man has been shot dead by police in the Bay Street apartment complex,” the police said.
The police also found the body of another man in the foyer of the building.
Witnesses had reported hearing gunshots and police urged pedestrians to take cover in a nearby supermarket and police urged pedestrians to take cover in a nearby supermarket.
The woman taken hostage, believed to be in her 20s, was rescued and is safe, police said.
Three police officers were injured in the siege.
Assistant Commissioner Andrew Crisp from Victoria Police said terrorism was “one line of inquiry” being pursued by police following the incident.
